CINCH
Caroline Cole’s fascination with ovals and twisting forms is explored in the geometry of this Cinch Collection of slip cast, ceramic vases. The shape of these charming, handcrafted, ceramic vases is generated by three ovals, with the smaller, middle oval turned through 90 degrees. This creates an intriguing, contemporary shape, that cinches in the middle when seen from one side but looks cylindrical from the other.
The plug for the plaster mould was 3D printed to ensure the accuracy of the twisting form, and the mould itself has been designed to be used both ways up, to create pots that are cinched either at their knees or shoulders. In a number of pieces, Caroline has reflected the inverted shape in inverted colourways, to create vases that work harmoniously as a pair. The patterns that have been meticulously hand painted on these ceramic vases play with the movement that is inherent in the shape. Some are generated from a series of points on the edges of the ovals to create diamond patterns, others follow the twist of the pot itself to create spiralling patterns that ebb and flow with the dimensions of the different ovals. On some pieces, the pattern is echoed around the inside of the vase, like a piece of folded Origami.
As with many of Caroline’s studio ceramics, prime number sequences and trompe l’oeil effects often drive the patterns and colours on these intriguing ceramic vases, while the combination of exposed underglaze and matt glaze bring a subtle texture to the surface, adding depth to each piece. Each piece is handmade with extraordinary precision and can take months to create, as layers of glaze are applied and fired several times to create depth and intensity of colour.
Each vase is a unique, handcrafted work of art – a collectable ceramic. However, if you are looking for something made specifically for you, Caroline enjoys designing with her clients, to create individual commissioned pieces.
The Cinch Vases stand 200mm tall.
