DROPLET

Caroline Cole’s fascination with ovals and twisting forms has found its way into the geometry of the two, complementary forms in her Droplets Collection. The shape of these delightful little slip cast vases starts with an identical ovoid base, that fits snugly into cupped hands.  The neck of each vase is oval in plan but twists through 90 degrees, from the base to the lip, one tapers and the other flares, creating male and female versions.

The plugs for the plaster moulds were 3D printed to ensure the accuracy of the forms.  The hand painted patterns on the surface of each pot play with the movement that is inherent in the shape, sometimes creating trompe l'oeil effects, sometimes joyously exuberant showers of colour, that ebb and flow with the dimensions of the different ovals. The combination of exposed underglazes, juxtaposed with matt and glossy glazes, bring a subtle texture to the surface, adding intensity to each piece with combinations of glazes being applied and fired several times, to create depth and layering of colour.

In a number of pieces, Caroline has created pairs of vases that work harmoniously together using pattern and colours that are identical - but different - suggesting the same DNA, just different manifestations.

Each vase is a unique, handcrafted work of art – a collectable ceramic.  However, if you are looking for something made specifically for you, Caroline enjoys designing with her clients, to create individual commissioned pieces. The Droplets stand 150mm tall.
