FRUSTUM

Despite its apparent simplicity, the shape of the ceramic vases in Caroline Cole’s Frustum Collection is deceptive: there is movement hidden in the shape because it is based on ovals rather than circles, and the ovals have been juxtaposed with each other.  By linking points on the short and long axes of the ovals, Caroline has created patterns that expose this movement and give voice to the gentle twisting spirals hidden in the shape, generating rhythmic patterns that weave over the face of each piece.  On a number of pots, the pattern has been folded, like a piece of Origami, over the rim and into the inside of the vase.

As with many of Caroline’s studio ceramics, mathematical sequences and geometry drive the patterns and colours on these vases.   The combination of exposed underglaze and matt glaze add further subtlety and texture to the surface.  Each piece is handmade with extraordinary precision and can take months to create, as layers of glaze are applied and fired several times to create depth and intensity of colour.

Each vase is a unique, handcrafted work of art – a collectable ceramic.  However, if you are looking for something made specifically for you, Caroline enjoys designing with her clients, to create individual commissioned pieces.

The Frustum Vases stand 300mm tall.
